Salad might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Indian food. For the life of me, I have no idea why takeaways give you those soggy little bags of tomato and onion along with your curry order – does anyone ever eat them!?
Indian salad can be delicious if done properly, and there are plenty of Indian salad recipes to choose from. Most are quite zingy and full flavoured, using fresh ingredients like raw onion, cucumber, coriander and lemon. These kinds of salads, like the Kachumber, are the perfect healthy accompaniment to dry dishes like Chicken Tikka and really add something special to the meal.
Obviously, one of my favourite times to eat Indian salads is in summer. I tend to grill huge batches of spicy Chapli Kebabs and Tandoori Chicken on the BBQ and serve them up alongside cool, refreshing salads. It really is the most amazing combination.
The best thing about my Indian salad recipes is that they’re all super easy to make. No fancy ingredients or vinaigrettes - just basic, wholesome ingredients that come together in a simply delicious way.
