A delicious fish pie cooked with some delicate Indian flavours all topped off with a sweet potato and chilli.

Hari says

I love a fish pie, it's creamy and soft and a great way to get lots of different types of fish (or seafood) into your diet.

I always found myself eating this with dollops of chilli sauces so I decided to tweak my pie recipe by adding a few choice Indian spices to compliment the fish and reduce my need to reach for the chilli sauce.

So thats how my very Indian Indian fish pie came into being. It's made with white fish and a little smoked fish for earthiness, prawns for sweetness and of course some spinach, well because it's good for you, but you can use whichever fish is fresh. The other key difference is that I like it topped with sweet potato and chilli flakes because it works really well with the spices and a new dimension too. Just give it a go and let me know what you think.

  • Ingredients
  • Method
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 large handful of fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 chilli, chopped
  • 400ml cream
  • 400g firm white fish
  • 200g salmon
  • 100g smoked fish
  • 300g prawns
  • salt and pepper to taste

Topping

  • 2 or 3 large sweet potatoes, boiled
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 2 spring onions, chopped
  • A pinch chilli flakes (more for extra heat)
  • 1 tsp garam masala

Method

  1. Heat oven to 200°C.
  2. Heat the oil and temper the fennel and mustard seeds until they crackle. Add the  chopped onion and cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook through allowing the onions to soften and turn translucent.
  4. Add the chopped spinach and chilli and once the spinach has wilted pour in the cream and stir. Season with the salt and pepper.
  5. As the cream warms up place the fish and prawns into the pan and simmer gently for a few minutes until it's just cooked through.
  6. Remove from heat and place in a casserole dish.

Topping

  1. Mash the sweet potatoes and add the ghee, garam masala and spring onions and stir to combine.
  2. Cover the fish with the potatoes and sprinkle it with chilli flakes.
  3. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the pie is bubbling.

Hello! This looks delicious! We don't have any heavy cream but we do have some coconut milk (creamy) and whole milk. Can either/both of those be used as substitution? Also, only have cod and prawns... will these be enough? Love your videos! I feel empowered to cook more Indian dishes!

This sounds absolutely wonderful. I have visitors for the weekend and would like to make it in advance and freeze it. At what stage should I freeze it and can it go straight from freezer to oven? How long in oven.
Im so glad I have found this site. I shall be back again and again. Thank you for great recipes.

Hi Valerie Yes it can be frozen just ensure it's cooled and freeze once you add the potato topping. You can then bake from frozen at 180C for 30-40 mins until it's bubbling hot all the way through or defrost and bake for 20-30 minutes. I hope they enjoy it! Please do take a picture and post it on the app here https://hari.is/2P5rXbk
      Thanks so much Hari

Delicious! I used kumara for the topping and gurnard, smoked mackerel and smoked warehou and it turned out great. Nice to be able to use spinach and spring onions from our own garden. Super recipe, thanks 8)
