An easy to make, fresh salad of finely chopped summer vegetables.

Hari says

So simple yet so delicious, a Kachumbar salad isn't far off what you'd usually make in terms of shredding or cutting vegetables. But this one has an Indian twist of garam masala for an added warmth, as well as coriander for that heady, herby aroma. Try it with any starter from chicken wings to samosas - it will enhance them all.

  • Ingredients
  • Method
  • 1 small red onion
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 chilli, finely chopped
  • Fresh coriander leaves
  • Juice from 1 lemon
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp kalonji seeds

Method

  1. Cut the onions, tomato, chilli into a very fine dice and place into a bowl.
  2. Finely chop the coriander and place into the bowl.
  3. Squeeze in the lemon and sprinkle in the salt, garam masala, kalonji seeds - stir and serve.

Served with

A lovely fresh Indian salad that works beautifully as a side to any meal.

    Hi Hari
First I also have to say that I love your website. Am cooking a surprise Indian meal for 35 people in a few weeks as a surprise for my husband's birthday so I am looking for recipes. I have never heard of kalonji seeds and I don't know if I will be able to get them in Belgium. Can I replace them with something else?

Hi Elaine - Kalonji sees are the same as nigella or onion seeds - does that help? Thanks Hari
